You walk down to the water to clear your head, and by the time you reach the sand the same worries have walked with you. Sandy Bay is a suburb of beaches, campus paths and family streets, and it can be surprisingly easy to feel alone with a problem in a place that looks so full of life. Chrysalis Psychology & Wellbeing is in Battery Point, roughly 1 km from the centre of Sandy Bay measured in a straight line. Many Sandy Bay residents find the rooms at Knopwood House close enough to reach after work, study or the school day.
Sandy Bay is one of the largest suburbs in Hobart, with 12,315 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 39. It is home to the Hobart campus of the University of Tasmania, Wrest Point, and a string of beaches including Short Beach, Nutgrove Beach and Long Beach.
The community is varied. Of residents, 60.2% were born in Australia, China was the most common country of birth outside Australia at 10.2%, and 68.9% spoke only English at home. Couple families with children made up 36.5% of families, 53.5% of people aged 15 and over held a bachelor degree or above, and cafes and restaurants, hospitals and higher education were the three largest employers.
A suburb that combines a university campus with family homes brings its own pressures: assessment deadlines, parenting demands, and for some people the added work of living far from the place they grew up. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that 38.8% of Australians aged 16 to 24 had experienced a mental disorder in the 12 months before its 2020 to 2022 national survey, compared with 21.5% of all adults aged 16 to 85.
Support does not need to wait for a crisis. You can read about anxiety, self-esteem and confidence and parenting support, or our guides to coping with exam stress and when to see a GP about mental health.
Individual therapy may draw on cognitive behavioural therapy for worry and low mood, or acceptance and commitment therapy for building a life around your values. For families, our page on family therapy explains how we involve parents and children. We also offer group therapy programmes and assessment services.
Battery Point adjoins Sandy Bay, and Hampden Road, which runs from Sandy Bay Road, provides access to Battery Point. Parking is available at the Salamanca Square Car Park at 20 Montpelier Retreat, listed by Hobart City Council, and the council website shows current tariffs. Metro Tasmania has a journey planner for current bus services. If you would rather stay at home or on campus, telehealth psychology is available.
Medicare rebates may be available for up to 10 sessions each calendar year with a Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP. We also welcome NDIS participants who are plan managed or self-managed, clients funded through DVA or Open Arms, and people using WorkCover, MAIB, an Employee Assistance Program or a private health fund, depending on eligibility. A GP referral is not required to contact us directly. Current details are on our fees structure.
