Psychologist South Hobart

Support for South Hobart adults, children, and families

The path beside the rivulet is quiet in the morning, but the house on the other side of it is not: lunches, uniforms, a child who will not settle, and a plan for the day that only works if nothing goes wrong. Looking after everyone else can leave very little energy for yourself. Chrysalis Psychology & Wellbeing is in neighbouring Battery Point, and South Hobart residents often reach us with a short drive or a call to arrange telehealth. Our psychologists work with adults, couples, children, adolescents and whole families.

About South Hobart

‍

South Hobart is a family suburb on the slopes of kunanyi / Mount Wellington, with 5,886 residents and a median age of 38 at the 2021 Census. Couple families with children made up 37.3% of families and one-parent families made up 16.0%. In the two weeks before the Census, 24.8% of people aged 15 and over had provided unpaid care for a child.

Its landmarks tell a long story. The Hobart Rivulet, now a popular park and transport route, was the main fresh water source leading to the city centre from Wellington Park, and the Cascade Brewery is described as the oldest brewery in Australia. The Cascades Female Factory operated between 1828 and 1856, and All Saints Anglican Church dates from 1858.

The weight of caring for a family

‍

Parenting can bring joy and exhaustion in the same hour. A child who becomes distressed at drop-off, resists school or is overwhelmed by strong emotions can leave parents unsure where to turn. You may find it helpful to read about separation anxiety and our article on separation anxiety in children, school refusal, behavioural issues and parenting support.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that 21.5% of Australians aged 16 to 85 had experienced a mental disorder in the 12 months before its 2020 to 2022 national survey, and that women were more likely than men to have done so (24.6% compared with 18.3%). These are national figures, and they show how common it is for adults to need support while they are supporting others.

How we can help

‍

Our psychologists can meet with a child, a parent or the whole family. See our page on family therapy and on family conflict to learn more. For parents who are hard on themselves, compassion focused therapy explores self-kindness, and individual therapy offers a private space to focus on your own wellbeing. Group programmes are described on our group therapy programmes page.

Getting here from South Hobart

‍

South Hobart shares a boundary with Battery Point. If you are driving, the underground Salamanca Square Car Park at 20 Montpelier Retreat is a council car park in the precinct, and the council website lists current tariffs. Metro Tasmania has a journey planner to check current services. Many parents prefer telehealth psychology for sessions between school drop-off and pick-up.

‍

Funding and access

‍

Medicare rebates may be available for up to 10 sessions each calendar year with a Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP. We also welcome NDIS participants who are plan managed or self-managed, clients funded through DVA or Open Arms, and people using WorkCover, MAIB, an Employee Assistance Program or a private health fund, depending on eligibility. A GP referral is not required to contact us directly. Current details are on our fees structure.

Yes. Our psychologists work with children, adolescents and families. A parent or guardian can call (03) 6263 6319 to discuss the most suitable starting point.

‍

Do I need to attend in person?

Not always. Telehealth is available, which many South Hobart families find helpful around school and work routines.

‍

Can I claim Medicare for family sessions?

Medicare rebates depend on the individual receiving treatment and a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan. Please call us and we will explain how this applies to your situation.
