Beyond the Superwoman: Unpacking the Mental Load on International Women's Day

As we celebrate International Women's Day, we often highlight the glass ceilings shattered and the milestones achieved. Here at Chrysalis Psychology & Wellbeing, we want to celebrate those victories while also addressing a quieter, internal struggle that many women face: the weight of the "mental load."

In the field of psychology, we know that our environment and societal roles directly impact our mental health. Despite tremendous progress, many women still find themselves as the default project managers of their households, the emotional compasses of their families, and the primary caregivers - all while excelling in their careers. This phenomenon, often called the "mental load" or "worry work," involves the constant, invisible labour of anticipating needs, remembering appointments, and managing schedules.

The Psychological Toll of "Having It All"

When society tells women they can "have it all," it rarely mentions the psychological gymnastics required to actually do it all. This constant state of hyper-vigilance can lead to:

  • Chronic Stress: The brain never truly switches off, keeping the nervous system in a state of low-grade fight or flight.
  • Burnout: Characterised by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment.
  • Resentment: Even in supportive partnerships, an unequal distribution of this mental load can strain relationships and intimacy.

Redefining Strength

This International Women's Day, we invite you to redefine what strength looks like. True psychological strength is not just about enduring the load; it is about examining it.

  • Audit Your Load: Take a moment to write down everything you are responsible for - not just the chores, but the remembering of the chores. Seeing it on paper can validate why you feel so tired.
  • Practise Delegation (Even if it is not "Perfect"): Relinquishing control can be anxiety-inducing, but it is essential for mental well-being. Let go of the standard of perfection to gain the peace of partnership.
  • The Power of "No": Your time and energy are finite resources. Protecting them is an act of self-preservation, not selfishness.

To the women juggling it all: We see you. We honour the invisible work you do. And we are here to support you in not just coping, but in thriving.

Happy International Women's Day from all of us at Chrysalis Psychology & Wellbeing.
